7th AGM of Sri Lanka Business Council of JapanThe 07th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Business Council of Japan (SLBCJ) was held on 18th December 2010 at 2.00 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Embassy of Sri Lanka.

It was attended by Patron –Mr. Esala Weerakoon(Charge d’ Affaires), President - Mr. Jagath Ramanayake, (President/ Rama DBK Ltd), Executive Secretary - Mr. Prince Samuel (President/Legend Travel), Treasurer - Mr. Nilam Alawdeen(President/M Alawdeen Ltd), Vice President : Chiba - Mr. Jithendra Samarawickrama (President/Sweeny Jewellers), Vice President : Tochigi - Mr. Tilak Perera (President/Juria International), Vice President : Saitama - Mr. Chandika Perera (Managing Director/Mabroc Teas), Members - Mr. Chandana Upul Silva (Restaurant La Fiesta), Member - Mr. Ken-Ichi Watanabe, Member - Mr. S A Meegalla, Ex Officio - Mr. M Somasena, First Secretary (Commercial).

Starting the meeting, Mr. Tilak Perera proposed that the minutes of the previous meeting were in order and correct and it was seconded by Mr. Nilam Alawdeen. Everyone including the President Mr. Jagath Ramanayake warm heartedly welcomed the Mr. M. Somasena, the new First Secretary (Commercial) of the Embassy. In His following Speech Mr. Jagath Ramanayake expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the tasks of SLBCJ during 2010. He then briefed on the activities carried out by him & the committee during year 2010. Shanghai Expo had been a great event to promote Sri Lankan business and the great efforts made by Mr. Hubert Jayakody organizing the Sri Lankan representation was acclaimed. It was mentioned that the new regulation changes has enabled exporting of hybrid vehicles to Sri Lanka. The contributions made by Mr. Watanabe, Mr. Nilam Alawdeen, Mr. Jithendra Samarawickrema, and Mr. Chandana Weerasena of the Sri Lanka embassy in successfully promoting SLBCJ booths at the Sri Lankan festival 2010 was much appraised. During this discussion, Mr. Ramanayake suggested the suitability of interacting by the SLBCJ and the Embassy with USS Co., Japan to reduce the costs of the export inspections as it would be greatly beneficial for Sri Lankans exporters. Two important projects of SLBCJ which would be carried forward from 2010 to this year would be

• Organizing Japanese business visit to Sri Lanka.
• A magazine in English and Japanese, displaying business ventures in Sri Lanka as well as in Japan

Mr. Somasena announced the names of the new office bearers for the year 2011, who were elected having earned the highest votes as follows...

• Saitama - Mr. Chandika Perera
• Chiba - Mr. Jithendra Samarawickrama
• Tochigi - Mr. Tilak Perera
• Ibaraki - Mr. Lasantha Nandasiri

A decisive discussion took place thereafter where Mr. Jagath Ramanyake invited the person with second highest votes to take up the presidency for the next term due to restraints in his commitments and time. Mr. Nilam Alawdeen was following the same actions and was requesting the replacement of his position as well. After much discussion and deliberations the whole executive committee led by Mr. Alawdeen, Mr. Chandika Perera and Mr. Upul Chandana continuously invited Mr. Jagath Ramanyake to continue his position for another year. Under the ongoing requests by the members Mr. Jagath Rmanayke agreed to continue the term for this year as well committing himself for the success of SLBCJ as usual.

In his speech Mr. Esala Weerakoon congrdulated Mr. Jagath Ramanyake for continuing the term forward among his other commitments and the newly elected members of the SLBCJ committee for their achievement. He mentioned about the rapid development Sri Lanka is going through under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksha. He went on to say that all SLBCJ members are ambassadors of trade & commerce and they should consider helping Sri Lanka in promoting tourism. The newly appointed First secretary of commercial services of the embassy Mr. Somasena would assist SLBCJ in all future activities to achieve these objectives.

After deciding tentatively the dates for Executive Council Meetings for the year 2011, the AGM was adjourned.
